Career & Work

Build a 3D Modeler Portfolio

Hello!

Now I am studying character modeling in one center (I’ll probably talk about it a little later). And since one of the options for my future work is the sphere 3D then I need a portfolio.
As my teacher said, the first thing to do is to do 10 diverse works. Actually, first of all, I want to finish what we started in the last course, namely - revolver.
Yes, this is not a quick thing, given that I have a girlfriend, study and work combined with her (study). Therefore, I do not set a goal to make a portfolio for myself in a month.

Let me do a teaspoon a day, but this will lead to the desired result. Not all days I will be able to get to the computer (vacation trips and the like), so not every day there will be work on models. On such days I would like to look for new ideas. Now I have thoughts "well, it's easy, it's already been done by someone, why?". But after the course it became clear why - to gain experience and hands.
On my own site - I have a personal blog that has not been updated for about a year, probably, and now it is under repair, because. he was devoured by a virus. I want to make a gallery there, where it will be possible to download all the models I have made. Since I work in the student version, I do not have the right to make models on a commercial basis.

Goal Accomplishment Criteria

10 works on your own site.

personal resources

Time, student version of 3DMax

Goal ecological compatibility

Old own thoughts that I want to turn into reality with the help of this service

I need this for additional features in life

Since 2011, almost all educational institutions A student portfolio is required. It must be compiled in primary school. It is clear that for a first grader this will be a difficult task, so basically the preparation of this document falls on the shoulders of the parents. And it is quite natural that many of them will have a question about how to arrange a student's portfolio.

What does a student's portfolio look like?

A portfolio is a collection of documents, photographs, samples of work illustrating the knowledge, skills, abilities of a person in any activity. A children's portfolio for a student provides information about the child himself, his environment, school performance, participation in various school and extracurricular activities. It demonstrates his success in creativity, sports, and hobbies. The school explains the purpose of creating a student portfolio primary school the fact that in the process of work the child comprehends his first achievements and opportunities, he has an incentive further development abilities. This job will help him when he transfers to another school. In addition, the portfolio of a gifted child gives more chances for admission to a higher educational institution in the future.

There are 3 types of student portfolio:

  • portfolio of documents containing material on the achievements of the child in the form of certified documents (certificate, certificates, prizes, awards);
  • portfolio of works, which is a collection of creative, educational or design work of a student;
  • testimonials portfolio, consisting of the characteristics of the student's attitude to activities.

The most informative and common is a comprehensive portfolio, which includes all of the listed types.

How to make a student portfolio?

It is not so difficult to make a portfolio for a student with your own hands, you will need imagination and a desire to create, as well as the cooperation of the child with his parents.

The structure of any portfolio includes a title page, sections and appendices. You can buy pre-made forms at a bookstore and fill them out by hand. Alternatively, design your own in Photoshop, CorelDraw, or Word.

Over time, the child's portfolio needs to be replenished with new demonstrations of success and achievement.

Post sponsor (): Recently it has become fashionable to create a decorative pond (even my parents have reached for this fashion).

This is the last part of the voluminous letter. Read also the previous parts:

In general, my excitement is indescribable.
As all the people who know me tell me - that I have a STRONGLY low self-esteem and a strong high level self-criticism.
It happens that people ask me to show the work on which I have been working for a month or two, if I find even the slightest flaw in this work, I can delete the project with all the render results and all the scenes and start doing it over again ... And for often my work when I appreciate people say that the estimates are greatly underestimated. That's why Last year I stopped showing my work altogether.

And I've been studying in this field for 3 years already and I have a strong conviction, for some reason, that - "GODS" CG graphics work at the studios with at least 5 years of experience with higher education.
I don’t know what to do about it, but even after reading your blog, I only felt better for a couple of days.

I always worry about these points (by priority):

  1. Licenses.
  2. Knowledge.
  3. Will I be able to find a job in Odessa.
  4. Lack of higher education, can this ruin my attempts to go to work.

I am ready to work for $300, but even with this money I am afraid to go somewhere and try to act without a portfolio.

I think - what if my knowledge is not enough. What if there are the very, very newcomers in the studio, better than me ...

I am currently working on my portfolio. Modeling(High/Low)+Sweeps+Texturing+Rendering is the main focus of GameDev.
They tell me that the project that I want to implement on the portfolio is very large-scale and probably there is no reason to implement such an extensive project in order to find a job for $300+...

And now for 3 months I haven’t gone outside to learn /CorelPainter, to finish my studies in Maya/3DsMAX/After Effects/Photoshop/Mental/Vray, well, I’m mastering even more than 20 small programs and a couple of engines for games Source/CryEngine/Unreal Engine/X-Ray . I also improve my WEB skills in order to make a very high-quality business card site and present myself from a professional point of view.

I haven't been out of the house for 4 months.
Well, I go out only to see my grandmother home from work and buy cigarettes at home ...

And I still keep thinking - Damn, suddenly I won’t pull it, damn it suddenly won’t work out, maybe I’ll study for 3 more years, damn it, I can go to sailor’s courses, it will probably be easier ...
And all because I want to help my family with finances and I just can’t realize my knowledge.

I am very skeptical about blogs. More specifically related to your blog.
He turned everything upside down in me (as he already said only in the good sense of this phrase).
I wanted to live, I was afraid of death, I saw a chance that I could still achieve something.

In general, when I came across your blog - something manic worked in me - I started downloading your blog on a PC in full, all the pages absolutely, threw it on 3 network computers and on a USB flash drive.
Sat down and started reading everything. I read 10 hours non-stop on the first day. The second day I re-read the information I was interested in for the second round, also ~ 10 hours.
And on the third day, I read the rest of the topics that didn’t really interest me. I also followed links to external resources and enslaved all the information there

Your blog has been sent to all my friends who are somehow connected with CG. And they also found your blog very interesting and some, like me, beamed after reading it.

Here are the things.

Well, in general, I felt better ... I did not express everything.

It would be stupid to express everything and it would be useless, and so a cue ball of text was formed that would be stressful to read and a person of your level would have absolutely nothing to do.
In fact, I don't even know if this letter will reach. It so happened that for 13 years I [email protected] I sent the letter only 5 times.
*Excluding emails to robot bots for domain registration*

Thank you for your attention, and for the work you have done on maintaining your blog!

Best regards, Sergei!

ANSWER!

THANK YOU, Sergey and to that electrician who cut the wires so timely, FOR THIS LETTER!

As I said, this letter reminded me of myself at the age of 19.

I remember that I wanted to write a letter to one gaming office to be hired as a modeler. Yoma-yo, what did I write there... I just went to the university and didn't want to miss classes, and this company only needed people for a full-time (8-hour) day. Therefore, I painted my schedule every minute and the time of work in their office. Like, in the morning I come in, work a little and leave for the second pair, then come back again, work and again go to the fourth pair, then come back and work late to make up for lost time

And here's something else. All these thoughts... talking to myself... doubts... sleepless nights...

YO MAMA! WHY THE FUCK ARE WE SO TERRIBLE?!

Having met somewhere a young female I like, I do not approach her. First, I scroll through our entire future dialogue in my head. When I get to the place where she sends me to hell (it's still there, in my head), then I just turn around and leave:-|. And why does he get to know me if I already HAVE A BAD END?!

That's how it is here. We, " for some reason", so intimidated that in 99% of cases we come up with a bad ending. Which then, again" for some reason"That's exactly what's happening.

LESS DOUBT! MORE BUSINESS! And not just deeds, but purposeful deeds. Those. a case that has a specific purpose with a specific date of implementation. And you need to set yourself an enchanting goal, and not a small one.

Take the example of the legacy your aunt left you, who lives 560 kilometers away.

A notification arrives that you have been left a legacy of $2.46. If you do not show up within 45 days, then this money will go to the next relative in the hierarchy. You look at the date of the letter and realize that those 45 days expire the day after tomorrow.

And what will you do? You won't even take your hand off the keyboard! You will continue to knock on the clave in some kind of social network. Maybe write a post about it. Like, fuck, I already got two dollars of inheritance here.

But if the amount of the inheritance is $24,600... Oooooh! I am sure that in a second you will already be booking seats on the train or running to warm up the car for a future trip.

So it is with a dream. A petty dream - and there is no need to realize it. A big dream - yes, you will break through with your elbows to it.

Therefore, if you have set a goal and the date you set is already approaching - DO NOT REDUCE THE GOAL! Better push back the date!

All this I mean is that your, Sergey, goal, a three hundred dollar salary, will not even pay off going to a massage therapist (so that, if you don’t bring the case, you can correct your twisted back after 11 years of sitting in front of a monitor).

Now for your questions.

1. Licenses for 3D editors. Something tells me that in all of Ukraine there may be a dozen companies that use licensed software. But the employees of these companies who buy licenses are still sitting on pirated copies. Since they need these licenses only for show. It's rare when trideshniki, when popping up the same glitch for the hundredth time, call the support service and ask to fix it and send them a minipatch.

In all my interviews, I have never been asked about software licenses.

2. Higher education in the CG field. Judging by my experience, no one asks about it, no one needs it, and, moreover, no one checks for its presence. Perhaps this is because in our country there are no certified (I'm talking about state diplomas) specialists in any of the specialties in 3D computer graphics.

But on the other hand, if I were you, I wouldn’t talk about the fact that you don’t have a tower at all. It's just that many employers have such an opinion that higher education is MANDATORY NEEDED, at least some. Purely in order for a person to learn to "live" ... so to speak, to get a "life experience" of survival at the university.

This opinion sounds in the head of employers like this: "If HE (ie, a hypothetical employee) could not even manage to get / earn / buy a diploma, then how will he manage to hand over the work on time." Or something similar.

3. What type of work to start with? In my opinion, the best way to start a career would be to work in a large or medium-sized studio. Where there will be the same three-persons around you, from whom you can ask for advice, see how they work, how the whole team works.

I would go into freelancing after I had amassed a small list of clients whose trust can be gained by working in a studio. So to say, to take you apart hand by hand.

On account of whether to work in the city or outside it. I am sure that there are a lot of companies/studios/small firms in Odessa that need trideshniki. Moreover, now this is a very popular profession: from spinning 3D figures on the site, to animating a camera flying over a private cottage and modeling game characters / locations.

Start by viewing the existing vacancies in the specialties designer, modeler, animator, visualizer, artist in your city. See even those vacancies for which you are not strong. Usually vacancies are posted by people who are far from CG and therefore call them whatever they like. This way you will have an idea of the quantity and quality of the "market".

4. Uncertainty when choosing a 3D program. I have already written about this many times (start with the article "or kung fu", and then follow the links and you will understand my point of view on this issue). I'll just add here, it's good that you are learning this and that. The thirst for knowledge is very good. And don't put limits on yourself don't limit yourself to ANYTHING(including these two packages 3ds Max and Maya). Your employer, customer, girlfriend, wife, parents, children, family budget, house, public opinion, news, media will restrict you anyway without your desire/consent.

So take on EVERYTHING while you are young and have not turned into a conservative, for whom even the version of your main package is too hard to change.

5. Documents for employment. Employment history, identification number, passport and no certificates. An international (or other really significant) certificate is certainly good, but outweighs your portfolio and charisma.

What should be the portfolio of a trideshnik.

To start a career, I think it would be better to make a wide-ranging portfolio. After all, you never know how fate over you "poizditsya".

Also, I think, we need to do one large-scale work and a few simple ones (so, for quantity). And then it will be announced with just one job somehow not solid. Moreover, it is not necessary to do everything with your own hands.

For example, I remember at the beginning of my career I had one video where I made a sunrise over a field of wheat using plugins. Those. there was no work there. Wheat field - it was a plane with an animated noise map. I pressed the button - clouds were added, I pressed another one - the sun, I pressed the third one - the animation was rendered. ALL. But the employer liked it. For him it was 3D!

And How bonus I will add. I was as much an idealist as you are (and to some extent I still am). Those. I, for example, cannot put a site on the net if it is at least somewhere imperfect. This and very bad trait and very good at the same time. On the one hand, it's a pleasure to work with you. On the other hand, you can pay for it, especially in our mega-fast-growing age.

While you are there licking, say, your awesome script (and DO NOT put a very raw non-alpha on the net), then during this time some company will have time to add such a function to their 3D package. We've arrived! You won't even get your 15 seconds of fame, let alone a material reward.

ACT!

ACT RIGHT NOW!

Don't delay - it's definitely a losing proposition!

Super! I learned a lot from your answer for myself!

Now my stereotypes and doubts are not partially destroyed, but completely and completely!

I was as much an idealist as you are (and to some extent I still am). Those. I, for example, cannot put a site on the net if it is at least somewhere imperfect.

Yes, things are exactly the same...

Sometimes productivity suffers because of this, so to speak.
Because by making a StarWars Racer Machine:
    img697.imageshack.us/img697/8477/11056932.jpg
    img822.imageshack.us/img822/4020/98151787.jpg

    img255.imageshack.us/img255/6397/85526175.jpg

I found a couple of minor flaws and decided not to fix them, but to redo all the work again. I redid it, it turned out worse, I redid it a second time, it turned out even worse. Then, nevertheless, I decided to fix it and not redo it and it turned out fine.

But I didn’t dare to show it to someone just because I didn’t do it properly the first time

Work done in 3Ds MAX + VRAY, inspired the Digital Tutors Introduction to Maya 2009 course.

I've been turning my views upside down (in a good way) for a week now.

And he immediately began to move towards my goal, putting aside video courses, and began to get practice / experience doing what he had planned

In general, so many cases have appeared with the help of which I can declare myself what to list and describe everything, I think it’s not worth it.

    ps
I also want to apologize for the fact that you had to deal with the formatting of my text.

    Justification:
It's just that the mail hosting from which I sent the letter is not quite friendly with HTML. And I was afraid that a crooked encoding would come / or the letter would not reach at all. Here is such a fun email hosting I have

    ps2
Regarding Maya/MAX, I just made the decision to go back to MAX with May after reading all the articles on your blog.

Thank you for your attention, Sergey!

    > Therefore, when you come to the interview, think of yourself, just in case, university/faculty/department where you supposedly study or studied.

This is the worst advice I have ever heard. I don’t know how it is in Ukraine, but in Russia this is checked for once, and for lying in a normal organization they don’t hire or even fire anyone, even the best specialist.

It is easier for me, as an employer, to come to terms with the fact that a person does not have a higher education and considers himself an elf than with a false candidate. He lied here - he will lie in another situation.

    • Yes, I also agree that the employer does not need to lie.

It is better to exaggerate a little here and there (without going to extremes) than to lie.

Yes, and I make my resume with the main rule (be honest with yourself).

I read a couple of articles, looked at other people's resumes, everything seems to be fine, but I don’t know who to consult with.
And is it worth it to pull someone because of such a trifle

Crap. I gave a blunder. I agree, it's not good to lie.
But this is a white lie! If you feel like you can handle this dream job and all you need is a “Tower” checkmark for a fat-headed advertiser, then it might be better to lie and get this job, get that priceless first push! Let you then fly out of there with a whistle and a creak (which I very much doubt)! But this will be a better start than not having found a job in your favorite specialty, leaving “temporarily” to work for the market!

And judge for yourself: what do students learn in universities? Lie! Lie about how you know more on the exam than you actually do.
What is the government teaching us? Lie! Lie so they can gain power. Lie so they can evade taxes.

We're not here for the gentlemen's party! Therefore, if the sheepskin is really worth the vychenki - lie.

Yes ... there are many things I want to say to Sergey. But Yura has already answered most of the questions well.
I, too, in many ways resemble the author of the letter (just a little older and stuffed more cones). There was a time and problems at school, and work with iron and passion for programming, computer music. There were already 3 attempts to get higher education. Everywhere there came a moment when the meaninglessness of everything that was happening became obvious, the quantity and quality of knowledge were called into question.
How do you like a philosophy and formal logic teacher who makes mistakes in the truth table? And how do you like a programming teacher whose program does not work until I fix it for him in front of the whole group? Or the veteran cameraman who claims the Red One camera is worth $2.5 million? Well, or an iron teacher who, in 2005, foaming at the mouth, argued that dual-core processors do not exist?
And this situation is everywhere. Maybe someone somewhere gets good knowledge, someone likes to study like that. I decided I've had enough.
Sergey, it seems to me that all of us have a problem not with knowledge of 3D. We all have huge psychological problems. Apparently, we were born at such a time and in such a place.
My main problems are the lack of support and misunderstanding of relatives.
There is not a single person nearby who would understand my passion for cinema and graphics. There is no one to whom I can dump some of the problems. You have to do everything yourself, and this, of course, is almost impossible.
Well, with relatives ... What to do, they still live in a world where VO means something. So it was 30-50 years ago, when there were 20-30% of people with higher education. Now, when there are 99% of them (sometimes with 2-3 VOs), what's the point of being in this crowd of middle managers?
About licenses for packages. I believe that as long as I do not make money on this, I have the right to learn from broken software. And everyone who screams that this is tantamount to theft is wrong. Because of me, the software company missed a possible profit and nothing more.
Good luck to all of us, and most importantly - to defeat the cockroaches in the head. Everything will be fine.

  1. And this situation is everywhere.

    Wow... can't believe it

Well, with relatives ... What to do, they still live in a world where VO means something.

    Yes, unfortunately it is

Good luck to all of us, and most importantly - to defeat the cockroaches in the head. Everything will be fine.

    Thank you for your reply!

    ps
There is an acquaintance of an acquaintance whom I personally know with two higher economic entities sells belts in the market.

Well, there are many such examples...

I like the signature of one forum member from the KA STEP forum:

When you see a graduate of the Faculty of Philology, what do you usually say to him?
“Two potatoes and a Big Mac, please. "

  2. Nevertheless, I decided to ask about my summary. This is still a trial version outlined in 10 minutes.

If someone can give practical advice on what should not be written and what should be added or paraphrased, I will be very grateful.

Let's say I have the most doubts:

I position my knowledge in this way:

Maybe this block should not be written in the resume at all?

Thank you for your attention, Sergey.

I probably would not dare to take on such a responsibility and give such direct advice to guys who are almost a hair away from despair and disappointment in themselves.
Why deceive the employer and start ruining your career right from the door? At the very first interview, everything will become clear and a dense veil of shame will securely attach to your name, and if in your city you can count good cg studios on two fingers of one hand, then you can safely forget about the cg career.
A good portfolio is a guarantee to find Good work. Why do ten mediocre and incomprehensible works when you can make one, but very good, even one frankly hacky work can ruin a good portfolio. I don't see anything wrong with creating your W.I.P on one of the major sites and watching how criticism from experienced colleagues helps you "grow". Now, with the release of a huge amount of software, people who do not work in the cg industry on simple enthusiasm give out such professional works that you never cease to be surprised, but here you want to get rid of “simple” works, unfortunately competition does not allow you to do this.

  3. and here you want to get off with "simple" works, unfortunately the competition does not allow you to do so.

No way I'm going to get off simple jobs.

There is already an extensive project that, according to the plan, will be done not for the sake of interest, but specifically for the portfolio. I also foresaw at what stages the project can be completed (as far as I can do it).

And the second work according to the plan should be the work done on Dominance War 5.

With these two jobs, I'm going to go look for a job.
Since both works will be as laborious as 20 interiors or 5 characters.

    For me:
    Works are works
    Portfolio work is portfolio work.

That is, I'm not going to put in my portfolio all sorts of toilets / washbasins that I made 2 years ago in 15 minutes.

  4. Sergey, I looked at your resume, it seems to me that everything needs to be redone there.

    CG includes 3D and 2D.
IT generally includes everything - from 1C configuration and assembly language programming of controllers in machine tools to sweeping floors in a server room and working as a PDA sales manager.
Well, the Web: the user is funny)

Farther: " professional work in packages and programs:
[a list of all the programs that you know well: 2D, 3D, Compose, Video, with explanations of which sections you are attracted to (modeling, rotoscoping, texture painting, etc.)]
And finally, "and other programs, such as:"
[a list of programs in which you poked around and watched / read a couple of lessons for at least a few days]

In my opinion, it is worth mentioning your hobbies. At the beginning, instead of any duplicate information (why write "Profile - Computer graphics (3D, 2D)"? After all, the resume will be in the relevant forums and sites.), Write a couple of lines about yourself: for example. "v free time I do photography and play chess).

In general, the entire summary makes a heavy impression, as if you are making excuses and lying. Relax and write everything briefly, positively without unnecessary details and confidently.

    • Well, the Web: the user is funny

I will delete that block 100%, I decided this when I started writing it

In my opinion, it is worth writing simply: “Computer skills at the level of a confident user and above.”

Yes, I agree. Will have to think.

And then, having estimated, if I was born in 91 and already have 13 years of experience, they will think “nonsense”.

After all, the resume will be in the relevant forums and sites.)

Well, in theory, the summary will be first in the Blog and then in the Business Card Site.
And the resume page will be like the main one.

So that a person would immediately understand what site he got to.

In general, the entire summary makes a heavy impression, as if you are making excuses and lying.

It’s a pity, the main rule of which I adhered to when writing is honesty.

In any case, it's just a "Trial Resume" jotted down in 10-20 minutes. It won't see the light soon.

Thanks for the great advice and suggestions!

I would probably remove the fundamental level of program knowledge altogether, not to mention the superficial one, it is really hard to read, it seems that you want to crush the employer with your experience, otherwise it is not very clear why a modeler needs knowledge of HTML 4 at work.
Leave the T-shirt and max this will be enough and really write what you specialize in more: interiors, character, environment, etc.

I can express my opinion on the topic of resumes and the search for employees, as the director of an animation studio. Studios are different and, accordingly, they have different requirements for employees. I know studios whose main orders are related to working for Hollywood and their requirements are very high, I know studios that make animation for mobile applications or games in social networks - there are very low requests and universalism is more appreciated. At my studio, we look at resumes, of course, but mostly we look at the manifestation of talent and certainly last but not least at higher education. and are always ready to give time for retraining and retraining if desired. Often we are ready to give time (2-4 weeks) to master our tools (T-shirt) at home and in the course of this decision some practical task from our plan. In general, the main thing for us is the general ingenuity, activity and talent.

On the topic of choosing software - you can still pick free 3D editors, such as Blender, for example. At least there will always be an alternative to officially do something and not be afraid for someone's violated rights, and an extra skill will also appear. I didn’t work in it myself, since I have enough max, so I can’t say anything about this editor, but judging by the cartoons on their website, it’s not so bad in terms of functionality.

How many I was looking for a job, they didn’t look at higher education very much (they clarified, of course, but even more in order to find out if I could work full time or I would always be with one foot here, the other at the university). Much closer attention was paid to the portfolio.
I completely agree with Yura that it is best to start working where there are still trideshniki. I can judge this from my own experience.

About deleting your work. When I was just starting to learn three-dimensional, I began to slowly pick something up in the lessons. Well, roughly speaking, I began to learn polygonal modeling from modeling some kind of car. Made the hood, doors, roof, trunk … Even handles and mirrors did the right way. Then I realized that I had already figured out this type of modeling and jumped to something else, although it did not take long to finish the car. And so I continued to study. Having dealt with something, I immediately switched to something new. What is the result? He already knew how to do something - but there was nothing to show!

Conclusion - even academic work needs to be completed!
In the future, when I recently began to study Zbrush, I made the head of a gorgon jellyfish according to the lesson. And I decided what to do to the end. As a result, there is a model with which I can confirm that I know something about the brush, but also a very good experience. I realized that painting the model there is much more difficult than I thought before, and what I would not even have learned if I had studied the old way - leaving right after I thought that I had taken everything apart)

  5. What is the result? He already knew how to do something - but there was nothing to show!

Exactly the situation. I went through many courses / lessons, repeated them.

I watched a lot of masterclasses/making of…/wips and repeated some of them partially and completely.

    And show nothing.

But the fact is, even if there are works completely completed, I won’t show them for anything.

Since the work done on the lesson / course, I think is not worthy of attention.

    ps
Thank you for your answer. You all helped me a lot and help.

  6. But I agree with the author of the blog that you can lie that he completed some courses in the specialty 3d / design. Everything is simple here, either pan or disappeared, who does not understand what I mean, read the life story of James Cameron, Bill Gates and a lot more famous people. If the employer deigns to check the data, and refuses you, well, then they do not need such an employee who is ready to do anything to achieve his goal.
In the end, after all, lying for good, at an interview, does not mean a total lie in my whole life, I don’t remember the last time I lied to anyone. But of course you need to weigh all the pros and cons for you personally.
As for licenses, if you are so paranoid about special services, then discover the disk encryption program (for example, Comodo Disk Encryption) and how the masks of the show will come, just pull the plug out of the socket and hope that they will not torture you to get the password)) For Russia and Ukraine, in order for the authorities to move, it must be realistically justified for them, or simply beneficial. So you have to distribute a couple of hundred TB of pirated software on a torrent, or light up somewhere mentioning that you use pirated software. no one will move because of some freelancer who works in a cracked 3d max, believe me))

  7. swap file on shutdown

Swap file (virtual memory), swap - I also clean

But rarely and did not automate this process

  8. To the author of the letter: well done for speaking out, after that it always becomes easier. I partially see myself in your words. I am 27, I will say without a shadow of embarrassment that I am an excellent specialist in the field of computer networks (SCN), but this is NOT MINE! The understanding of this came half a year ago .. the understanding that I spent almost 6 years of my life not doing what I needed .. it became at least sad. And now, although I have practically zero experience in 3D, I sent out a resume to all companies where there is a need for 3D specialists and wrote that I would work for free for the sake of experience. You need to make up for what you've lost. And you have a lot of experience and you are only 19. So head up and have more courage. everyone bi cool! Experienced people are in demand in all areas of activity, regardless of their religion, height, nationality, the presence or absence of a / about, etc.! By the way, there are gamedev offices in Odessa, I don’t remember the names, but I found them all through rabotaua.

... I have a vocational school that gave me NOTHING and did not help in any way when applying for a job. And all that I now know and know, I learned while working in my company. Therefore, I think it’s not worth worrying about the military education now .. It will be necessary - you can always finish in absentia and get a diploma.

about the site.. if you need a beautiful and cool template, look here: http://imagevuex.com/ is a beautiful flash website engine for images. My hobby is photography and in a month I will launch my site on this engine. I liked.

    Good luck to you!

By the way, if there are people among the readers of this excellent blog who will take a free worker to practice in the field of CG, I will be grateful. I will consider all options. In 2-3 months you will get an excellent motivated full-fledged employee in your company. I compensate inexperience with diligence. (Sorry for self-promotion)

Necessary yuriki stir up the “I want to work for experience” section, where everyone who wants to come to CG will leave short resumes, and employers will hire newcomers for a nominal fee / free of charge)
Imagine how great it would be and how it would motivate people like Sergey and me ...

We are ready to sit through sleepless nights and months licking our portfolio to shine, read tutorials and videos to red eyes, sitting on only energy drinks and cold sandwiches and at the same time pulling out the last hair on the head or in other places to understand why the render will take 20 hours instead of 3, and this newly minted “brilliant” script, which has an error at the beginning, and we will frantically search for it at the end, will never run and no one will appreciate it, but if we are sent to work in Krasnoyarsk to knead concrete for a gravity dam, we will foreman we'll cut our throats if he suddenly doesn't pay us.
Are you really ready to go to work for free after all this? And in Krasnoyarsk to work for free? It's interesting indeed! After all, the work will be even harder and more incomprehensible, and it will also have to be retrained again. An internship is one thing, a job is another. Experience, of course, is a good thing and very necessary for a career, but you need to respect yourself at least a little. I understand, of course, enthusiasm, youth, sparkle in the eyes, although maybe I'm wrong and you are very tolerant people deep down in your soul since you don't need money and you chose cg just for fun)

Sergei! You did the right thing by sending the letter.
It's not about 3D, it's about self-esteem. Stop sitting at the computer and studying. Just stop, look at yourself FROM THE SIDE, that you know what you have achieved. And you know really a lot in your 19 years. I understand, if you were 30 years old, and you look at all the tutorials, then you can really ask the question “So what next?”. But you understand, 19 years old! This is just the beginning of life! At a time when your peers go to discos and don’t really think about the future, you have already laid the foundation for it. And yet, do not sit at the computer for 20 hours. I understand that you want to learn everything quickly, but I don’t think that in 10 years you will happily say: “Hurrah! I work at my favorite job in the studio, which I dreamed of all my life. What am I happy man! So what if I'm wearing glasses, I weigh 120 kg and my spine is curved. That's why I'm happy!"

Five kopecks about licensed software, or rather the specifics of work in offices where it is used, and these are usually large domestic or branches of well-known foreign companies, i.e. the most tidbits for job seekers :). If you are used to using any plug-ins for 3DMax, Maya, Photoshop, etc., or auxiliary programs like Unfold3d, etc., then most likely you should not expect that when you come to work in such a company, you will get what you are used to \ more convenient \ work faster. Therefore, in the process of work, it is worth trying to solve problems using the basic packages. for one it allows you to study and understand your instrument more deeply. For the same reasons, in the resume there is no need to indicate a long list of plug-ins and utilities that you know how to use, unless of course the vacancy does not provide for owning them.

I have worked and am working. There are much more computers than 40+. It is strictly forbidden to have anything unlicensed on the computer. This applies not only to plugins, but also to any software, including total commanders and the like, as well as video, music, games. Absolutely all software is licensed or free, and free software is not very welcome. To prove to our authorities that either is a long and thankless task. I can name a foreign studio purely for information in private, I will not write here. I also have many acquaintances in our large and foreign studios, so I know for sure that the situation with licensed software is not unique. Simple Western law-abidingness multiplied by the greed of our regulatory authorities.

    The letter touched)
I also want to support Sergey and wish him success!
In 10 years you will read your letter with a smile)

Probably already said, Odessa is not the limit. The fact that the vacancies there are not so hot should motivate you to develop to the level of prestigious firms even more. It seems to me that having a good portfolio, it is easy to move to another city and rent an apartment
A huge number of Ukrainians work in CG abroad, and all of them were in the same conditions as you

I had these doubts dispelled a long time ago, and I decided on the package pretty quickly. Maybe this is self-confident, but I think if the employer stops working on another program, it will not be difficult to retrain. This is even a plus. Two eyes give three-dimensional vision, and two packets give three-dimensional knowledge)

What can I console you with is that you definitely don’t have my doubts about the dream of becoming a professional. I was unlucky with the floor) The girls have a lower career ceiling, most of them are in 2D, or they visualize the interiors to the maximum. This raises very big doubts. I will not back down from my goal, but I am afraid to justify the stereotype and hang on a small office all my life, doing work of very dubious quality, but receiving indulgence

yes, a familiar situation)) by the way, when I was looking for a job, I found vacancies in games in Oedsse, but I don’t remember exactly in 3d or in flash. when I was looking for a job, I clearly set the goal that I wanted to make a game and it was in 3d) and they sent me various kinds of 3d offers, but I decided that until I find it in the gaming industry, I won’t calm down, although the money was already desperately needed. and in general I found it ..) without work experience) I only had experience in a non-commercial project ... the main thing when searching is to believe in yourself and in your goal, as well as in everything, and there will definitely be, sooner or later) there will be disappointments, for example, I am very I wanted to get into one company in Kiev, I did a test task there, I didn’t leave the monitor for three days, and they took another one !! it was a shame, but this did not stop us from looking further, the main thing is not to sit idly by, but to look! well, if there is no experience at all, then you can participate in a non-commercial project, at least a little, in order to gain experience, then there will be more confidence in your abilities and the portfolio will be replenished with works!

    ***********************************
    What does it get then?
Should I post all my alpha versions of 3d models that I haven't finished yet?

So the following will be correct (I'm not saying that I do this, I'm just giving an example)
Here's an example: I was going to model a certain character.
I made its basic features from Low-poly - so, here I did, everything means - I post it for everyone to see.
Now I am modeling. I licked the model to high-poly, a lot of any detailing, and so on. etc. - but no textures - so what? I take it and put it out again for everyone to see.
Next, I make a texture on it. I'm posting again.
And then I start the main project (which I planned to do). I'm doing some composition with my character. I've done everything. Laid out - as it should be.

It turns out that I should do just that, laying out my model step by step?

Yeah ... After reading the entire thread with comments on a letter sent 3 years ago to the author of the blog. All that was poured out there, doubts, fears, desires, dreams, aspirations, etc. And what do I see...

I have to repeat (I quote):
“I didn’t look for a job. There was no need for this as it was not.”

I did not work in my specialty, and I did not look for work. Usually job offers in my specialty found me on their own. But when offered, I refused. Why?

A long story and there is no point in explaining - you can say personal ...

It turns out that the author of the letter (who, by the way, wanted to work at the age of 19 for experience and food in the field of 3D) generally had everything on his side. It's sad, damn it.
Dedicated to the youth!!! Do not think about the future at the age of 18-20, do not look for a profession, do not define yourself, and most importantly, DO NOT WRITE about it. This whole thread showed me the following - WHO wants to do something - DOES and moves towards his dream at least at 10, at least at 19 years old. He does not write, “does not force” how difficult everything is and the world is a mess. BUT REALLY DOES AND MOVES. So that later at 22-25 onem wrote to Forbes what path he went through and what he achieved.

P.S. It turns out that all the advice, and everything that people wrote here and sympathized with the author of the letter, is a waste of their precious time, since the author said
“I didn’t look for a job. There was no need for this, and there is none. I did not work in my specialty, and I did not look for work. Usually job offers in my specialty found me on their own. But when offered, I refused.
