Clashes between popes and emperors continued for decades, so the crusading movement, organized at the initiative of the pope, initially did not find much response in the German lands. The emperor and the nobles of his empire were completely occupied with internal strife. Endless unrest in their own country did not allow them to participate in armed "pilgrimages" to the Holy Land. The French king behaved quite differently. He willingly responded to the papal call, but could not make a particularly significant contribution to the crusading enterprise due to the limited forces and means at his disposal. The territory of the then possessions of the French kings was limited only to Central and North-Eastern France. Burgundy and Lorraine were part of the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation, and the entire West of today's France was in the possession of the English kings from the Angevin Plantagenet dynasty. With the greatest enthusiasm, the various states founded by the Normans in northern France, England, Ireland, southern Italy and Sicily responded to the calls of papal Rome. After the preparatory Council in Placentia (Piacenza), where the envoys of Basileus Alexei I Komnenos also arrived from Constantinople with a request for military aid Pope Urban II uttered winged words at the Clermont Cathedral on November 27, 1095 against the "Saracens" (the Islamized Seljuk Turks and the Turkic nomadic tribe of pagan Pechenegs mentioned above), who by the time described were a mortal threat to the very existence of the Second Rome on the Bosphorus. : "That's what God wants!" - to this day remaining the motto of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher. Volunteers who wished to go on an armed pilgrimage began, at the initiative of Pope Urban, expressed at the Clermont Cathedral, to sew crosses of colored fabric on their clothes. For the first time in the history of the Middle Ages, a large group of lay people began to wear a uniform identification mark on their clothes. This innovation has survived to this day in both the military and civilian spheres. The sign of the cross became the first sign of belonging to a single army and an expression of the determination of the participants in the crusade to die on the way to the Holy City of Jerusalem or to bring the cause of its liberation from the power of the infidels to a victorious end. Since then, the cross has been considered the hallmark of the Christian militia, the army (militia), which in the era described in the West meant primarily chivalry in connection with its then decisive role in military affairs. According to the memoirs of contemporaries, some crusaders even tattooed or burned out the sign of the cross on their forehead, chest and right arm. In this they imitated the first Christians, who often put on themselves a cross, the name or monogram of Christ, the image of a fish, an anchor (a symbol of salvation and hope) and a lamb (the Lamb of God). Christian tattoos were often made in places where conversion to another faith was possible, for example, in areas of Christian Europe captured by the Turks. And even now, Ethiopians and Copts (Egyptian Christians), surrounded by Muslims, tattoo themselves in the form of a cross on their wrists. Crusaders setting off to liberate the Holy Land made tattoos of a cross on their foreheads (and also especially often on the crook of their arms) because such tattoos guaranteed them a Christian burial after death in battle (after all, it was often possible to identify the body only by these marks). The use of the cross as a military insignia served as an expression of a completely new idea for that time of merging the Host of Heaven with the host of the earth. From here it was already a stone's throw to the cross of the order knights-monks, who, with the sign of the cross on their clothes, shields and banners, indicating the main, religious, meaning of their service, defended Christian shrines from infidels with a sword. The pope's appeal was extraordinarily successful. Those wishing to participate in the crusade (this expression itself appeared later, contemporaries spoke of “wanderings” or “pilgrimages” to the Holy Land - although the very expression “crusade” means, in principle, nothing more than a “religious procession”, that is, something quite common in church life, and not only among Western, but also among Eastern Christians; during campaigns Kiev prince Vladimir Monomakh on the Polovtsy-Kipchaks, the Russian Orthodox army was also preceded by clergy in robes with crosses and church banners, and about the Galician prince Yaroslav Osmomysl in the "Word of Igor's Campaign", mindful of his participation in the crusades of Western "pilgrims", it is said that he “Shooting Saltans for the lands” with their “golden arrows”!) turned out to be so many that serious problems arose with the transportation of such huge masses of crusaders. Their vanguard, which in fact did not have a single command over it, was destroyed by the Saracens in Asia Minor. The main army of pilgrims, the core of which was the detachments of the Duke of Lower Lorraine (Brabant) Gottfried of Bouillon, a descendant of Charlemagne, and his brother Baldwin of Boulogne, having crossed the Danube, gathered in the winter of 1096/97 near Constantinople, where the leaders of the crusaders had to take an oath of loyalty to the Orthodox emperor of Byzantium as his overlord, that is, the supreme secular ruler. By the way, a few years earlier, a noble western pilgrim to the Holy Land, Count Robert of Flanders, Dutch and Zeeland, took a similar fealty oath to Vasileus Alexei I Komnenos, who, after his return from Jerusalem, left 500 heavily armed knights from his retinue ("Celts", according to Byzantine terminology), which were of great help in the struggle of Emperor Alexei with the enemies of the Cross and the holy Faith of Christ. By the way, the fact that all these noble "Latins" took a fiery oath to Vasilevs Alexei suggests that the mutual anathematization of each other by the Pope and the Patriarch of Constantinople in 1054 (later called the Great Schism) was not at all perceived by contemporaries either in the East or in the West as the final "split" of the once united Christian church into Eastern and Western. True, the Byzantines, brought up in the traditions of “Caesaropapism” (that is, subordination of the spiritual authority to the secular) sometimes seemed strange to the morals and behavior of the Western clergy, especially those Latin clerics who participated in the Crusades, as if serving as a prototype of the future militant knights-monks established in the Holy Land after its liberation from the Muslim yoke of military-spiritual orders (which will be discussed later in our story). As Princess Anna Komnenos wrote in her Alexiad: “We have a completely different idea of ​​the clergy than that of the Latins. We (Orthodox Christians. - V.A.) we are guided by the canons, laws and gospel dogma: “do not touch, do not shout, do not touch, for you are a clergyman”. But a Latin barbarian performs a church service, holding a shield in his left hand and shaking a spear in his right, he partakes of the body and blood of the Lord, looking at the murder, and he himself becomes a “man of blood”, as in the Psalm of David. Such are these barbarians, equally devoted to both God and war. Nevertheless, the attitude of the Byzantines towards the Western “Latin schismatics”, who were hired in huge numbers to serve in the Byzantine army and even formed the backbone of the life guards of the Constantinople basileus, called Eteria (Druzhina), as the elite guard of “friends” (“eters” or "Hetairoi") of Alexander the Great, remained rather sympathetic - until the very capture of Constantinople by the Latins in 1204. Crusader enthusiasm drove Christian pilgrims with the sign of the cross on their right shoulder farther and farther forward. Even the difficulties of the path could not stop their victorious march. In addition, the basileus ordered to supply them with everything necessary and gave them his own army to help. Almost simultaneously, the Norman crusaders rushed to the Holy Land (through the city of Bari in southern Italy) and the southern French soldiers of the Cross, led by the papal legate (through Dalmatia). All three armies joined near Antioch in Syria. And then it turned out that they did not have a single command, or even a desire to act jointly. Although almost all the leaders of the Christian army were among themselves in kinship or vassal-seignial relations, the “voice of blood” and vassal loyalty played an even smaller role “over the sea” (French: outre-mer) than at home. Difficulties began with the fact that Baldwin, the brother of the Duke of Lower Lorraine, and his people, having arbitrarily separated from the rest of the army, at their own peril and risk, took possession of the county of Edessa, which was very remote from Jerusalem, which was formally the main goal of the campaign, (ancient Osroene, named after Armenian Urfa), which remained in the power of Western Christians for more than 50 years. Following Baldwin, the leader of the South Italian Normans, Bohemond of Tarentum, showed similar activity, after a long siege and bloody battles he conquered (for himself!) the city of Antioch (June 3, 1098) and founded the Principality of Antioch. These victories of the crusaders were facilitated by active support from the population of the territories they conquered, which consisted mainly of Christians. The new masters gave their overseas possessions the usual Western European form. The “Frankish” knights of Baldwin and Bohemond received new lands in fief and settled throughout the Near East, not thinking about continuing the campaign against Jerusalem. As a result of such “bleedings”, the remnant of Gottfried’s army, who intended to continue the campaign against Jerusalem, turned out to be so insignificant that doubts arose about the possibility of recapturing Jerusalem from the Muslims without the arrival of new reinforcements from Europe. Fortunately for the crusaders, in the port of Jaffa (Yafo, Joppe or Joppa, now part of Tel Aviv), just captured by Christ's army, a small Italian flotilla, consisting of only 4 ships, arrived, pursued by a detachment of the Egyptian military fleet right up to the harbor itself. . The Genoese who were on the ships managed not only to safely go ashore themselves, but also to pull their ships and cargoes ashore. These ships saved from the Egyptians were very useful to the Crusaders. Now they had enough wood and other materials at their disposal to build siege engines, and the sailors turned out to be very experienced craftsmen in this matter. With great difficulty, overcoming countless dangers, the crusaders delivered everything to their camp at the walls of the Holy City. In accordance with the religious nature of the crusading enterprise, the attack was preceded by a thorough liturgical preparation. There was no doubt that if the crusaders were destined to take the city, they would be able to do it only by virtue of religious inspiration and the boundless hope of the army of Christ in the victory of a just cause. Therefore, on July 8, 1099, all the soldiers of the Cross, barefoot, but fully armed, ascended the Mount of Olives in procession, and then Mount Zion. The fact that the Muslims watching the procession from the walls in front of the eyes of the pilgrims desecrated the crosses further inflamed the religious feelings and fighting spirit of the Crusaders. However, until the morning of July 15, the attackers could not boast special success. They were helped by an unexpected vision. Many saw a certain knight on the top of the Mount of Olives, indicating to the besiegers where to direct the decisive attack. The detachment of Duke Gottfried, following the instructions of an unknown knight (later they said that it was the Holy Great Martyr and Victorious George himself!), Managed, having brought a siege tower to the indicated place, climbed the fortress wall and drove away the defenders of the city from this place. According to another legend, Gottfried of Bouillon, during the siege of Jerusalem, looked into the heavens and saw a flying swan. The snow-white bird flew four times around Gottfried's head, after which it headed towards Jerusalem and landed on one of the towers of the city wall. It was through this tower that Duke Gottfried, storming the city, entered Jerusalem with his crusading army. The crusaders broke into the city, pushing the retreating Muslims in increasing disorder, mercilessly killing the Hagarians, striking right and left, to the very Temple of Solomon (or rather, to the Al-Aqsa mosque located on the site of the temple), where they committed such a massacre that they literally walked ankle-deep in blood (some chroniclers claimed that it was not ankle-deep, but "knee-deep", while others - that "the blood shed in the mosque reached the very horse's bits"). Undoubtedly, this is an exaggeration, common for medieval chroniclers, such as the common expression: "Blood poured in hot streams", etc. But even in the city itself, the soldiers of God began to behave completely “not like God”. As if mad from the consciousness of his great victory , pious conquerors ran through the streets of Jerusalem, killing indiscriminately all in a row - men, women and children. They celebrated their victory with a horrific "bloodbath". The crusaders' methods of warfare plunged the Muslims first into amazement and then into horror. Until now, it has not been customary in the East to wage war with such a degree of ruthlessness. With the liberation of Jerusalem, the main goal of the crusade seemed to be achieved - the return of the greatest shrines of the Christian world. However, the crusaders had to continue to fight the Egyptians, from whom they conquered Palestine. In addition, the lands conquered by the "Franks" (as all Western Christians, or "Latins" were called in the East) needed an established system of government. Already on July 17, 1099, the princes of the crusaders gathered for a meeting to decide on the state system of their Middle Eastern state and elect someone from their midst as the ruler of the Jerusalem state. Opinions were divided. Some advocated a theocracy (theocracy), that is, a kind of ecclesiastical state headed by a patriarch (who had yet to be elected; the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem had long been in a safe distance from the Holy City - in distant Constantinople). Others preferred to see a secular lord, the king, at the head of the new state. In the end, it was decided to elect both a king and a patriarch. This Solomonic decision, which stimulated internal strife, along with many other factors later played a fatal role in the fate of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. The chaplain (confessor) of Duke Robert of Normandy, Arnulf, was elected the new, independent of Constantinople, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, and the Duke of Lower Lorraine, a descendant of Charlemagne, Gottfried of Bouillon, was elected king of Jerusalem. However, Gottfried, one of the few sincere idealists among the leaders of the 1st Crusade, decisively refused the honor offered to him. Only after much persuasion did he agree to stand at the head of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, and even then without accepting the royal title, for he, in his own words, "did not want to wear a golden crown where Christ himself wore a crown of thorns." Gottfried was content with the title of Advocate (protector or guardian) of the Holy Sepulcher. According to legend, it was he who first decorated his white cloak below the left shoulder with the image of a blood-red Jerusalem crutch cross with four small red crosses around the edges, in memory of the Savior's torments on the cross (four smaller crosses symbolize the stigmata-wounds on the arms and legs of the crucified Christ, remaining from the nails, and the large central cross is a wound from the spear of the Roman centurion Longinus, who pierced the rib of the Crucified to make sure of his death). In any case, the knights of the Order of St. The Holy Sepulcher, having chosen this cross of the color of the atoning blood of the Savior as their emblem, to this day they call it the cross of Gottfried of Bouillon. Gottfried did not rule for long and died already on July 18, 1100, having accomplished, in his own opinion, the greatest work of his life and glorifying his entire family for all eternity. In less than a year of his reign, however, he managed to lay the foundations of the state system of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and annex to his possessions, in addition to Jerusalem, the Palestinian cities of Hebron, Bethlehem, Ramla, Lydda, Nablus, Tiberias and Nazareth. The main ports of the country - Akkon (Akka, Acre, Akkaron, Ekron, Saint-Jean d'Acre, Ptolemaida), Caesarea and Ascalon remained in the hands of the Muslims, although they expressed their readiness to pay regular tribute to the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Since then, the name of Gottfried of Bouillon has been revered in the Christian world among the names of the "nine fearless", or "nine men of glory" (along with the names of three ancient heroes - the Trojan prince Hector, Alexander the Great and Gaius Julius Caesar, three glorious biblical warriors - the prophet Jesus Nun, the Psalmist King David and Judas Maccabee, and two exemplary soldiers of Christ - King Arthur Pendragon and Emperor Charlemagne). 3.

In February 1930, Pope Pius XI addressed the clergy and believers with a call for a "crusade" against the USSR. This appeal served as the beginning of a broad anti-Soviet campaign in many countries, which, according to the organizers of this campaign, was supposed to make it easier for the imperialists to prepare for war against the USSR.

Pius XI borrowed the idea of ​​a "crusade" from the arsenal of the Middle Ages. From the end of the XI century. to the end of the 13th century. At the call of the popes, a number of military-colonization campaigns to the East were organized, which were called the "Crusades". According to the statements of the popes, church preachers and reactionary bourgeois historians, the crusades were allegedly organized in order to "liberate the Holy Sepulcher" in Jerusalem, which was then under the rule of the Turks.

In fact, the crusades were military-predatory campaigns to the East, and it was not at all the struggle of Christians with Muslims, with "infidels", that lay at the heart of them.

Various classes of the then society took part in the crusades: large feudal lords (kings, princes, barons, dukes), striving to conquer new rich lands and increase incomes, small knights (nobles), who went on crusades with the aim of plundering and seizing lands and serfs. Many of them expected to get rid of debts for participating in campaigns. The crusades were also attended by the masses of the peasantry, downtrodden and crushed by serfdom, whose situation at that time was extremely difficult. Going on campaigns, they hoped to free themselves from feudal oppression, escape from their owners, find freedom (serfs who went on a campaign were freed from serfdom). Crusades were supported and subsidized by the trading cities of Italy (Venice, Genoa, etc.), which hoped to win trade routes to the East with the help of the crusaders.

The crusades, which brought enormous wealth to the church, contributed to the rise of religious fanaticism among the population. The popes arranged special money collections and even introduced taxes on the organization of crusades, and the property of non-returning participants in the campaigns became the property of the church. Thus, the crusades, inspired and organized by the popes, raised the political weight of the papacy and served as a new source of increasing wealth and strengthening the influence of the church. The declassed rabble took an active part in the crusades: tramp and criminal elements who were looking for opportunities to plunder.

In 1096 the first crusade began. Unorganized crowds of peasants, bandit knights and the criminal rabble that joined them moved from France, Germany, England, Scandinavia, Italy and Spain to Constantinople. Passing through the Christian states of Europe, they plundered cities and villages, raped, causing universal hatred for themselves.

The first detachments of the crusaders were defeated by the Turks, but already in the autumn of 1096 new detachments moved to the East. When the crusaders reached Constantinople in 1097, the Christian Greeks, whom the crusaders allegedly went to help against the "infidels" (Turks), saw that they were dealing with rabble, with rude barbarians who were looking only for personal gain, and began to take measures against the crusaders who tried to plunder Constantinople. From there, the crusaders moved to Asia Minor, making terrible devastation along the way and massacring the local Muslim population. Only in 1099 did the crusaders reach Jerusalem and on July 15 they took the city. Christ's army staged a massacre in the city, alternating with solemn divine services. Eyewitnesses report that the crusaders literally walked through pools of blood. They killed men, women, smashed children's heads on stones. The crusader army plundered everything that could be plundered: houses, churches, shops, public institutions.

Crusaders set up on the east coast mediterranean sea four small Christian states (Jerusalem, Antioch, Tripoli and Edessa), where they introduced the same order that existed in Europe: with the rule of feudal lords and the enslavement of peasants (some of the crusaders who came, but mainly Muslims, Arabs and Syrian Christians). The clergy played an important political role in these states. The Crusades brought great wealth to the church. The Italian trading cities, which received a number of trading privileges, greatly benefited from the campaigns. Karl Marx notes that the Italian coastal states, as a result of the first crusade, “…were enriched thanks to the free trade with the East, and the well-paid transportation of pilgrims increased their fleet.”

The conquests of the crusaders were fragile. With their atrocities and heavy oppression, they aroused the hatred not only of the Muslim population, but also the enmity of Christians, in particular the Greeks. In 1144, the Turks captured the Edessa state of the crusaders. Pope (Eugene III) began to call for a new campaign.

In 1147 the second crusade began, in 1189 the third. Following this, with short breaks, five more campaigns were organized. The last - the eighth - was launched in 1270. By organizing new crusades, the ruling classes of Europe hoped to divert the attention of the peasants from the class struggle that had become aggravated in European countries. Oppressed by feudal lords and monasteries, the peasants rebelled against their oppressors. They burned monasteries and feudal castles. In order to distract the peasants from the struggle against the oppressors, the church began again to call for a crusade to the East.

The predatory goals of further crusades were often not even covered by religious motives. During the fourth crusade (1202-1204), organized by Pope Innocent III, the crusaders, at the instigation of Venetian merchants who sought to defeat their trading rival, the city of Constantinople, took this city (in 1204). Constantinople was then the capital of the Christian (Orthodox) state - Byzantium. In Constantinople, "Christ's soldiers" staged a robbery and massacre.

Here is how the historian describes the deeds of the crusaders in this city: “These three days of robbery in the glow of a fire surpass any description. After many years, when everything had already returned to its usual order, the Greeks could not recall the scenes they had experienced without horror. Detachments of crusaders rushed in all directions to collect booty. Shops, private houses, churches and imperial palaces were thoroughly searched and looted, unarmed residents were beaten ... In particular, the barbaric attitude of the Latins towards art monuments, libraries and Byzantine shrines should be noted. Bursting into churches (Christian! - M. Sh.), the crusaders threw themselves on church utensils and decorations, broke open shrines with the relics of saints, stole church vessels, broke and beat precious monuments, burned manuscripts ... The bishops and abbots of the monasteries subsequently described in detail for edification posterity, what shrines and how they acquired in Constantinople. Although they described the history of theft, they called it holy theft…”. Pope Innocent III tacitly approved of these crimes. In the words of Marx, “the pope, having expressed his indignation for the sake of decency, finally gives absolution to this bestiality and the vileness of the“ pilgrims ”.

No less shameful for the papacy was the children's crusade. In 1212, about 30 thousand children, deceived and blinded by religious fanaticism, moved from France to "liberate Jerusalem" (in 1187 it was again conquered by the Turks). Soon another 20,000 children left Germany. Most of them died on the way, many were sold into slavery.

The history of the crusades shows that in the past, the church and the ruling classes covered up their selfish goals with religious slogans.

Objectively, the Crusades contributed to the strengthening of trade relations with the East and familiarization of Europeans with Eastern culture.

The popes organized "crusades" not only against Muslim countries, but also against Christian countries, which, for one reason or another, aroused the wrath of the Roman rulers. So, in the XIII century. they organized bloody campaigns against the rich cities of southern France and ruined them. The popes organized campaigns of crusading bands against the Slavic peoples in order to conquer them and at the same time to spread Catholicism among them.

At the end of February 2009, the Russian media bypassed the following message: The Russians want to return Soviet Union . Most Russians would like their state to resemble the Soviet one. These are the results of a survey conducted by the "Gallup" in Russia".

So, in 2009, so many years after the collapse of the USSR, "the majority of Russians" still yearn for the lost Soviet statehood.

Probably, many of this majority asked themselves the question: “What forces contributed to the collapse of the country, the memory of which makes them so nostalgic?” Usually, the destroyers include political, economic and informational forces, that is, what is obvious and lies on the surface.

But there was another force that had a particularly destructive effect, while being in the shadows, behind the scenes.

This force was Vatican. There is so much talk now about the desirability of a union between the Vatican and the Moscow Patriarchate that we are sister churches, that we have much in common. In this regard, it would be nice to find out with whom we are invited to unite. We will begin to understand this just from the history of the organization of the collapse of the USSR, where one of the main roles was played by PopeJohn PaulII. Let's say more, without the intervention of the pope, this would not have been possible.

As expressed it Timothy Garton Ash: “Without the pope, there would be no Solidarity (resistance movement against the government of the then Poland. - Auth.). Without Solidarity, there would be no Gorbachev. Without Gorbachev, there would have been no fall of communism.” The “fall of communism” in this case was expressed not in the collapse of the ideology that now “lives and wins” in the West, but in the collapse of the statehood of the Soviet Union and its allies - the countries of Eastern Europe, which, in fact, have long since moved away from the communist ideology. Only a few symbols and names remained from it. It was an external facade that hid a completely different system. It was called Soviet, socialist. But it's not about the name. At its core, it was a construction-oriented system. national statehood, objectively impeding creation of everything global, including the Global Khaganate. Confrontation national and global lies at the heart of modern political and economic confrontation. During the existence of the Soviet Union, it was he who was the core of everything national, around which the countries of Eastern Europe and the countries of the Third World united, also choosing the path of national statehood. The USSR formed this coalition of national forces, and this coalition rested on it. Thanks to this, the national could defend itself and repel the attacks of the global.

This situation, of course, did not suit the global forces, the forces of the Khazarocracy.

During the Cold War, attempts were repeatedly made to undermine the bloc of national forces. In the 70s, a strategic decision was made - first, undermining the union from within, by decomposing one of the members, provoke a rebellion, a revolution of all. And then deal a fatal blow to the core alliance - Soviet Union. Thus, the question arose in which state to lay that mine, which would subsequently blow up the entire system of national statehood so that small fragments of it remained.

The implementation of this plan was not easy. In order to turn some state into an explosive device capable of blowing up the entire system of national forces and creating the prerequisites for the destruction of its core, it was necessary to think through a number of conditions that the state must comply with.

First, this state must play significant role in a coalition of national forces, so that the situation in it really affects everyone.

Secondly, since the main blow was directed against the key Russian statehood as the foundation of the national system, it is necessary that this state organically carried in its bowels an anti-Russian charge. That is historically strongly opposed Russia, politically and spiritually .

Thirdly, it is necessary that this state was organically connected with the West, which is the core of the coalition of global forces. Organic connection in this case means a historical union with the West in political and spiritual (religious) terms.

Only one country met all these three requirements - Poland.

When they decided on the state-mine, it was necessary to work out strategy subversion aimed at destroying system of national statehood headed by the USSR.

This strategy was to form within Poland such a force that would be able to act in two directions against its own national statehood and against the USSR as the vanguard of the national statehood system in the world.

Because the main, most fierce and most bloody battles are waged against us by an adversary on the battlefields of this particular war. He thinks that, having seen what victories he has already won, how many countries and religions he has conquered, seeing how mercilessly he destroys those singles who dared to oppose him, we will be frightened and surrender. He thinks we will lose hope. But the victorious history of Russia as the history of wars for faith and the exploits of our ancestors in them teaches us to understand what we are fighting for, what we are defending and for what we are ready to give our lives in these wars. This is our main weapon- native Orthodoxy. It teaches us such warm and saving feelings - faith, hope and love. This is what has always saved us, and will save us now. This is what should be inscribed on the banner of our future Victory. Hopelessness is the lot of cowards, capitulators and slaves of the adversary. Hope in God is the fate of victorious heroes, this is the fate of our people, who aspire to God with all their heart and trust in Him. Hope in God is the fate of Holy Russia, under the guidance of Christ, confidently going through the ages, through all the storms and trials on the course of Victory.

Therefore, the Ecumenical Councils have always had a Christological character, that is, their central theme - the only theme and the main gospel - has always been the God-Man Jesus Christ and our salvation in Him.

Thus, the Ecumenical Councils defended the purity and correctness of the faith, so the issues discussed at them were mainly dogmatic. The forthcoming Eighth Ecumenical Council does not have dogmatic issues on the agenda, on which no decisions have been made at previous Councils.

For the Orthodox, the holding of the Eighth Ecumenical Council would be useful only in one case: if it followed a correct ecclesiological assessment and condemnation of the heresy of ecumenism that prepares the coming of the Antichrist.

But such a topic will not be raised, since the purpose of this council is to legitimize this heresy of heresies, as St. Justin (Popovich) called it. And the ecumenists collect it in order to justify their apostasy, their treacherous actions in relation to the Orthodox faith.

December 9-17, 2009 in the Orthodox Center of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in Chambesy(Switzerland) held a meeting of the Inter-Orthodox Preparatory Commission, convened for the purpose of further elaboration of the issues on the agenda of the Eighth Ecumenical Council. But at the same time, information about the "eighth ecumenical" is rather scarce, and it seems that they are carefully hushed up. As a result, many do not even suspect that in a very short time they will be forced to face the fact of gross violation of the Orthodox Faith, betrayal of Tradition, patristic teaching, violation of the canons.

Let's turn to the prophecies of the Holy Fathers about the upcoming Eighth Ecumenical Council:

Reverend Kuksha(Velichko): “The end times are coming. Soon there will be an ecumenical cathedral called "saint". But it will be the same "eighth council, which will be a gathering of the godless." On it, all faiths will unite into one. Then all posts will be abolished, monasticism will be completely destroyed, bishops will be married. Newsletter calendar will be introduced in the Universal Church. Be carefull. Try to visit God's temples while they are still ours. Soon it will be impossible to go there, everything will change. Only a select few will see it. People will be forced to go to church, but we will not have to go there under any circumstances. I beg you, stand in the Orthodox faith until the end of your days and be saved!”

Archbishop Theophan of Poltava: “I don’t know anything about the Eighth Ecumenical Council yet. I can only say in the words of St. Theodore the Studite: "Not every assembly of bishops is a council, but only an assembly of bishops who stand in Truth." A truly Ecumenical Council does not depend on the number of bishops gathered for it, but on whether it will philosophize or teach Orthodoxy. If he departs from the truth, he will not be universal, even if he calls himself the name of the universal. Archimandrite John (Krestyankin), Pskov-Caves Monastery: “Keep the covenants that were given by the predecessors of Alexy, who is now elevated to the Patriarchal throne. First. Reverend Seraphim of Sarov: “There will be a time when, under the pretext of church and Christian progress, for the sake of the requirements of this world, they will change and pervert the dogmas (teachings) and statutes of the Holy Church, forgetting that they originate from the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, who taught and gave instructions to His disciples - to the holy Apostles about the creation of the Church of Christ and its rules ...

Woe to the one who subtracts or adds one word. Our Church has no vice; woe to him who dares to make any changes in the Divine services and the statutes of that Church, which is the "Pillar and Ground of the Truth" and about which the Savior Himself said that even the gates of hell will not prevail against her; that is, that it will remain unchanged until the end - until the second coming. Any desire to allegedly improve, change the rules and teachings of the Holy Church is heresy, the desire to create their own special church according to the invention of the human mind, deviation from the decree of the Holy Spirit is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will not be forgiven forever.

Rule 2 of the VI Ecumenical Council reads: “Let no one be allowed to change or cancel the aforementioned rules of the apostles, Ecumenical and Local Councils and the Holy Fathers, or, in addition to the proposed rules, accept others, with false inscriptions, compiled by some people who dared to feast on the truth.” And the Council act of the same council reads: “Three times anathema for every innovation and deed against the Church Tradition and the teaching and rules of the Saints and the blessed memory of the Fathers. Anathema, if anyone violates any written or unwritten Tradition of the Church.

“So, “the seven heads are the seven mountains” - the seven Ecumenical Councils, - “on which the woman sits” - the Holy Orthodox Church (Rev. 17, 9). It does not need to be added or subtracted, for the number seven is the number of fullness. (Hieromonk Pavel (Lebedev)).

Thus, we must understand that the holding of the Eighth Ecumenical Council is an integral part of a special operation to establish a new world order, where actions take place in a religious space.

Let us resist every evil contrivance in order to preserve our true Orthodox faith, transmitted by the Holy Fathers, in purity, without adding or subtracting anything.

The funds of the Museum of Local Lore contain interesting photographs of the 1930s, reflecting important events pre-war period. The photographs show a demonstration of workers in the city of Penza, organized in response to the "crusade" against the USSR, declared by the Pope in 1930. The demonstration took place on Sovetskaya Square, which was attended by a large group of citizens with banners and banners.

From the very beginning of the existence of the Soviet state, the ruling circles of the capitalist countries of Europe and the USA, seeking to destroy or weaken it, tried to oppose the young socialist republic with a hostile bloc of European countries, allegedly united by Christian civilization. The Vatican provided all possible support to these circles. In 1918-1920. Pope Benedict XIV, hiding behind the slogan of protecting religion, actively supported foreign intervention in Russia, and put together an anti-Soviet front. Ten years later, in 1930, another Roman high priest - Pius XI - proclaimed a "crusade" against the USSR, which served as a signal for unleashing an anti-Soviet campaign on an international scale.

In the 1930s, the "crusade" slogan was taken up by the German and Italian fascists. By calling for an end to "God-opposing Bolshevism," the Goebbelses and Rosenbergs sought to mislead the German and world public, portraying the fascist cutthroats as fighters for Christian principles, sought to mobilize the Germans to prepare for an aggressive war against the USSR. Characteristically, the Nazis named their plan of attack on the Soviet Union after the German leader of the third "crusade", Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa.

Fans of Mussolini did not lag behind the Nazis, who in their own way even "improved" the practice of crusading propaganda, expanding the scope of its application. Exterminating the civilian population of Ethiopia in 1935, the Italian fascists insisted that they were doing so in the name of introducing the true faith of Ethiopians - heretics, schismatics and pagans: a "crusade" against Ethiopia was proclaimed - thus, the fascists hoped to sanctify the aggressive war in the eyes of believers Italians.

The same trick was used by the Spanish fascist rebels, who, together with their German and Italian allies, were strangling the Republic in Spain under the banner of a "crusade" against the "Reds".

Thus, even before the start of the Second World War, the medieval slogan of a "crusade" was widely used in reactionary imperialist propaganda. The papacy and fascism, in their hatred of the USSR, acting hand in hand, invested in the concept of "crusade" a content different from the medieval one. They adapted it to their purposes, seeing in it important tool ideological preparation and substantiation of the bloody adventures of the imperialists.

This practice of lies and deceit has received further development during the Second World War, when those who directed Hitler's aggression tried in every possible way to instill in the fascist soldiers the idea that by killing and robbing, burning and destroying, the army of the fascist Reich was acting in the name of higher ideals approved by heaven itself. "God is with us" - such a motto was inscribed on the belt buckles of the Nazi warriors. The slogan of a "crusade" against Bolshevism, proclaimed by the German fascists, served as a banner for the darkest part of the soldiers of the German fascist army, Catholics and Protestants, drugged by Nazi propaganda.

The First Crusade Proclaimed by Pope Urban II

The church could have benefited substantially from the crusade against the Seljuk Turks, since Urban II was aware of the potentially significant benefits of helping the Byzantines.

Pope of Rome Urban II announced First Crusade November 27, 1095 at the Church Council in the French city of Clermont. The church-sanctified attempt to expel people "enslaved by demons" would serve many purposes: the Seljuk Turks successfully occupied the Holy Land, which at that time was part of the Byzantine Empire. From the time of the pontificate of Gregory VII and the fatal battle of Manzikert, in which the Byzantine forces were defeated, Eastern emperors sent appeals to Rome for help. Now the Pope could act on an opportunity that would give him an excuse to do much more than just send a few knights on horseback.

Goals and objectives of the First Crusade

Europe has been a battlefield, a place of continuous conflict and endless war. Uniting the feudal factions against a common enemy would reduce the likelihood of further wars and direct their resources and energies against the Muslims. “ Let those who are accustomed to make wasteful private wars even against the Faithful, go further against the Infidels in a battle worthy of being undertaken,…” Pope Urban II issued the first unconditional indulgence of its kind to those who "fighting against the pagans". For a medieval man who was afraid of the fire of purgatory, this absolution was very convincing.

A successful crusade would greatly increase the prestige of the papacy and perhaps put an end to the schism that had taken place between the eastern and western Christian churches. And although the emperor Alexei I Komnenos asked for a relatively small number of professional soldiers - mounted knights, Urban called all Christians: knights, lackeys, “rich and poor”, and even "robbers". Despite the power, this army could not be led by any of the noteworthy kings; and Philip I of France, and Henry IV of Germany were excommunicated from the church.

Incentives for participation in the First Crusade

Those participants in the Campaign who owned the land, the Church guaranteed its protection and surety, so that while the lords are in distant lands, fighting for Christ, the violators could not take possession of them. Those who lift up the cross have their debts forgiven. Since usury was prohibited, many of these debts were incurred through Jewish creditors.

However, European Jews were not taken into account even when the participants of the Campaign began to mercilessly kill them throughout Europe. Some brave bishops opened their gates to Jews seeking asylum, but many others remained deaf to their pleas.

The city of Nicaea was liberated from Muslim control in 1097, and in 1099 the army of the Crusade was already at the gates of Jerusalem. The final battle was a bloodbath: thousands were executed. Fulcher of Chartres writes that “If you were there, your feet would be submerged up to the ankles in the blood of the slain. None of them were left alive. They spared neither women nor children.”.

Legacy of the First Crusade

March 2000 Pope John Paul II apologized for the sins committed in the name of the Church, including the Crusades. The First Crusade resulted in approximately 150 years of crusading activity, both official and unofficial. Peasant Crusade, headed by Peter Hermit, ended in a full-scale massacre outside of Constantinople, while the ill-born Children's Crusade ended with the captains of the ships transporting young people to North Africa instead of the Middle East to sell them into slavery there.

The crusade did not end the schism, nor did it end the “private wars” in Europe. Nevertheless, it provided the impetus for a new age of commerce and commerce, a significant benefit that could pave the way for the prosperity of the city-states that emerged in Italy.
