School holidays are a time of long-awaited rest for any student. Both first-graders and future graduates count the days before the start of the holidays literally from the first days of the school year.

After all, the holidays of 2017-2018 are not just days free from study, but also time filled with games, communication with peers, and family vacation trips.

The exact dates of the holidays are also important for parents, because many of them try to keep their child busy at this time, send them on an interesting trip or take a vacation at work.

During the 2017-2018 academic year, there will be fewer vacations at institutes, universities and other higher educational institutions, as students rest only in winter and summer. Each university appoints the exact vacation schedule for students depending on the dates of the sessions.

Winter holidays for students begin at the end of January and end in mid-February. In the summer, student vacation dates also depend on the session and practice, which is often scheduled for June, which means that you can go on vacation only in July.

Also, the practice can be postponed to August, and the holidays will begin as early as mid-June. It all depends on the particular university, therefore, in order to carefully plan your vacation, you need to clarify the data in the administration of the university. The only thing that can be said for sure is that the holidays should not be less than 6 weeks.

Traditionally, both for schoolchildren and employees of educational institutions, winter holidays start on December 24th. There may also be additional holidays for first grade students starting on February 18th.

It is worth noting that during the holidays, teachers must be present at work for a certain number of hours, while the vacation schedule itself is quite flexible. The fact is that the Ministry of Education only issues recommendations on the dates of the beginning and end of school holidays, while the final word will remain with the pedagogical council of the school.

Teachers are the most disadvantaged, because for them the winter holidays in Ukraine 2018 will last only a week, while for schoolchildren - as much as 16 days (from December 24 to January 8). As for university students and teachers, everything here is purely individual: in some institutions, holidays are no different from school ones, but at the same time there are universities in which the duration of the winter holidays is almost two months.

This step is taken by management in order to save money during the heating season. Students, as a rule, work out pairs in advance on Saturdays during the academic semester, so that they can then spend two whole months at home.

By the way, the idea of introducing such a practice at school, when the 2017-2018 winter holidays begin for schoolchildren in Ukraine, has already been voiced more than once, which would help to significantly save on heating. Opponents of this initiative believe that schoolchildren will overwork too much, and, for example, no one will want to walk in the summer because of the abnormal heat.

There are quite a few reasons why the winter holidays in schools can be extended:

The temperature is too low (if the thermometer shows below 25 degrees below zero, then you can no longer go to school);
Cold in classrooms due to poor heating. Quite often there are situations when the school administration violates sanitary standards and forces teachers to work at temperatures below 18 degrees, but this is strictly prohibited;

In a situation where more than a quarter of schoolchildren do not attend school due to a viral disease (ARVI). In this case, a quarantine is announced and the school closes indefinitely to prevent further spread of the disease.

In most cases, one week of quarantine will be enough, but, for example, during the swine flu epidemic in 2009, the quarantine lasted several months.

In Moscow, the vacation schedule is set by the city Department of Education. It is the same for all schools.

Winter holidays

The period of winter school holidays depends on the system of education that is adopted at the school.

Students in quarters have a rest in the winter once: in late December - early January. Holidays last 10-14 days. First graders receive an extra one-week winter holiday in February.

Students in trimesters have a rest in winter twice: in late December - early January and in February. The first vacation lasts 10-14 days, the second - a week.

First-graders will receive additional winter rest from Monday February 19 (actually from Saturday February 17) to Sunday February 25, 2018.

Additional holidays

The administration of an educational institution may introduce additional vacations in winter if:

The air temperature is below -25 °С (for students in grades 1-4), -28 °С (grades 5-9) and -30 °С (grades 10-11);

The temperature in classrooms is below +18 °С;

The epidemic threshold of morbidity exceeds 25% of the total number of students in the school.

Autumn vacation

Vacation cancellation

The administration of an educational institution may cancel the autumn holidays if the school has already been quarantined this fall.

School holidays change in Russia every year. This is due to the fact that the Ministry of Education annually adjusts the schedule of classes in accordance with holidays and weekends, which change from year to year. Agree that it is not logical to set the beginning of the holidays on such days.

Educational institutions have the right to draw up their own schedule, and decide on what date to start and finish the educational process. Thus, even if schools have the same programs, they may have a different academic calendar.

The Ministry usually makes amendments to the educational process six months before the start of the academic year, that is, the information will become finally known sometime in March 2017. Thus, the autumn holidays are expected to take place from October 28 to November 6 inclusive.

Winter holidays usually run from the end of December to the second decade of January. New Year holidays are the same for all forms of education. The beginning of studies falls on the first working day after the New Year holidays. Most often it is the tenth of January.

First graders have extra winter holidays. This is due to the fact that young children need time to get used to the usual stresses at school.

Spring break is at the end of March and beginning of April. At this time, the calendar does not contain public holidays, so what date the holiday starts and ends depends on what days the weekend is.

Rest in the spring should be expected from March 26 to April 1.
Weekends in Russia in the summer traditionally occupy all the summer months.
Summer vacation will begin on June 1 and will last until August 31.

School holidays when studying in trimesters

For those studying at school according to the trimester system, the situation is similar to the previous one. The Ministry of Education in Russia has not yet prepared a corresponding order. In this case, we will also try to calculate the schedule of the educational process, looking at the calendar for 2017-2018. This is even easier to do, since in this type of school they use the 5 + 1 principle when teaching. Simply put, they study for five weeks, then rest for a week. That is, the process of obtaining knowledge has a clearly defined cyclical nature.

After 35 days of training comes a seven-day rest, and this is repeated throughout the school year. The exception is the New Year holidays. In trimester educational institutions, schoolchildren have the same days off as in a regular school. So, let's consider specifically how many days you have to rest in such establishments.

Autumn holidays include two periods:

first	09.10.17 – 15.10.17
second	20.11.17 – 26.11.17

The New Year holidays, as noted above, are identical with similar weekends in a regular school, so how many days they last, the question does not arise.

Winter holidays also consist of two periods and look like this:

first	25.12.17 – 08.01.18
second	19.02.18 – 25.02.18

In the spring-summer period, the rest of students will look like this:

Spring break will be from 04/09/18 to 04/15/18.
The longest summer weekend traditionally starts on 06/01/18 and ends on 08/31/18.

Existing deviations from the norm

Why? Everything is pretty simple. Adults want to understand when children will be free from school in order to calmly plan their family vacation or find ways to keep their children busy. What determines vacation dates for schoolchildren?

Each parent is concerned that his child would be constantly at work, attend school, study in sections and develop as correctly and comprehensively as possible. At the same time, we must not forget that the Ministry of Education only recommends a list of dates for schoolchildren, taking into account the list of working and weekend days approved by the government, and the workload, and various circumstances (the same quarantine). But directly the heads of educational institutions have the right to make adjustments to suit their needs - to shift the beginning and end of the "school leave" by 1-2 weeks.

Now in the territory of the Russian Federation there are three main education systems:

by quarters;
by modules;
by trimesters.

However, we note that the calendar-modular and trimester planning approaches are the same, so children will have rest in the same period.

This is only approximate data. The only exceptions are the beginning and end of training. Everything here is the same as before: on September 1, 2017 we go to school, on May 31, 2018 (lower grades earlier) we finish our studies.

What can affect the changes in the calendar?

Educational institutions with a quarter system of education

The very first - autumn holidays, which are marked by the celebration of the Day of National Unity - 04.11. This year, the holiday falls on Saturday, as a result of which the all-Russian day off was postponed to the following Monday - 11/06/2018. As for winter, the New Year holidays of 2018, as a rule, coincide with the all-Russian weekend dedicated to the celebration of the New Year and Christmas. This means that students go on vacation from about December 27 to December 30. Therefore, January 09-10, 2018 is the beginning of the third quarter, as well as the first working day for adults throughout the country.

In the spring of the 2017-2018 academic year, no national holidays are planned, and therefore changing the period for their holding in the spring of 2018 depends only on the decision of the school management. Any unforeseen circumstances can also affect - the same quarantine, during which lessons are not held. As a result, it is necessary to “catch up” in order to have time to teach all the topics of the school curriculum. Because of what, the terms of the spring “vacation” of schoolchildren can be shifted.

Important! For children aged 6-7 who go to school for the first time, an additional winter weekend is set in the last week of February.

Schools with a trimester type of education

Oddly enough, with this system of education for parents it is somewhat easier, although they themselves learned differently. The fact is that the methodology initially relies on the following scheme: the child studies for five weeks, rests for one - and this cycle repeats again and again. The same period lasts for modules with a different type of training.

The only exception is winter holidays, which last longer. After all, it is associated with the New Year holidays, approved by the production calendar. Therefore, the number of days off during the winter break from study is always greater.

What can cause delays?

The main reason why the final word in the approval of the vacation period is left to the director of the educational institution is the too large palette of territorial features of each region.

So, in a number of Siberian and northern regions, training is often canceled due to severe frosts. Another objective reason may be a severe flood or an epidemic of diseases.
