The names of companies, organizations and brands are one of the most difficult problems for translators. If you don’t have time to contact a translation agency, but you want to master this science on your own, read our article. In it, we will consider the main approaches to translating company names and their products from Russian into English, as well as formulate the basic rules that translators can use.

Title translation

The first thing to be translated is the name of the subject of activity (company, organization, institution).

No less important is the translation of the proposed products or services (goods, services, names of specializations into educational institution etc.). And already at this stage, the translator faces significant difficulties.

Fundamental rules

In the existing manuals on translation issues, as well as on thematic sites and forums, unfortunately, not enough attention is paid to this problem. In addition, the available publications are mainly devoted to translation from a foreign language into Russian.

Translation from Russian into English is practically not considered, which sometimes puts the translator in front of a difficult dilemma. But it is the correct presentation of the company and its products that plays an important role in the success of promotion in the market.

Rule 1: Check for a translation option

If you are translating the name of a company or institution, do not be too lazy to go to their website and familiarize yourself with English version. It must have a title in English.

We advise you to use an existing translation of the name of a company or institution (of course, if it is not frankly a failure), as this will help the potential recipient of the translated text find the company or institution of interest to him.

By the way! If the translation is difficult, but the work needs to be done, then you now have a 10% discount on any kind of work

Rule 2. Follow the rules of the English language

Translation for a foreign language audience should be understandable to a foreigner. The proposed translation should not be similar to the language of aliens from outer space.

To do this, it is important to follow the second rule: the translation must be done in accordance with the rules of the English language.

Consider examples of unsuccessful translation of a Russian name into a foreign one (examples were taken from the websites of companies posted on the Internet in the public domain):

  • sweets "Belorusskaya kartoshka" and "Kommunarka" - the sweets "Belorusskaya kartoshka" and "Kommunarka".

In the example, when transferring to English language names of sweets, tracing paper was used in combination with transcription: the sweets "Belorusskaya kartoshka" and "Kommunarka". The order of the words is calque and the name itself is transcribed.

This option is not acceptable in English. The correct layout should look like this: the Belorusskaya kartoshka and Kommunarka sweets.

In addition, the use of double quotes for names is uncharacteristic for the English language. Double quotes are only used to introduce a quote.

The translator uses the rules of the source (Russian) rather than the receiving (English) language, which entails a problem in their perception by the target foreign-language audience.

Rule 3. Do not forget about thematic resources on the Internet

So, for example, on the forum of the online dictionary Multitran you can find a lot of useful information. Here is an example of the logic of thinking:

  • JSC "Svitanak" - Open JSC "Svitanak". In accordance with the rules of the English language, the name of the company had to be formatted as follows: Svitanak OJSC.

An analysis of thematic sites and forums devoted to the problems of translating the legal form of companies indicates the observed trend towards the transfer of the abbreviation JSC (open joint stock company) when translating into English using transliteration, namely: JSC.

In this case, the company name could look like this in English: OJSC Svitanak or Svitanak OJSC.

We support this decision to transfer the legal form for the reason that the form of organization of the company, denoted by the English JSC and the Russian JSC, is not equivalent in the compared pair of linguistic cultures.

In other words, using the abbreviation JSC to designate the Russian JSC, the translator misleads the potential reader by offering him incorrect information.

  1. When translating, take into account the rules for following the components of names in English: the first place should be the name, the second - the clarifying component (s); the name is written without quotes; all components of the name are written with a capital letter, and the qualifying component is written with a lowercase letter.
  2. In order to select a more accurate and adequate translation option, refer not only to bilingual dictionaries, but also to other sources of information, for example, thematic sites, forums, and sites of foreign companies working in this field.
  3. Use online programs that allow you to track the frequency of use of a particular unit.

Convert to pleasure. And the student service is always ready to help if you have any translation difficulties.

Before you open your own LLC, you need to think it over well and decide on its fundamental factors. First of all, you need to come up with the name of the LLC, decide on the address of the office, with the best size of the authorized capital (UK), give preference to the taxation regime that is convenient for you.

You can give your society up to six brand names:

  1. company name in Russian in full and in abbreviated form - for example: Limited Liability Company "Carrier", and abbreviated - LLC "Carrier";
  2. corporate name of LLC in a foreign language (full and abbreviated); LLC in English: Limited liability corporation"Ferryman", abbreviated "Ferryman" LLC;
  3. company full name in the language of the peoples of the Russian Federation.

But only one will be obligatory: in Russian and written exclusively in Cyrillic. You can choose any name of the LLC, but if it coincides with someone else's well-known, litigation is possible. At the moment, there are a number of restrictions on certain words "Moscow", "Russia", "Moscow", "Russian". They can be used in the name, but you need to get special permission beforehand. Give your LLC a unique name. To avoid misunderstandings, you can go to the website of the Federal Tax Service and find out there which names are often used. In the "Information about legal entities entered in the Unified State Register of Legal Entities" section, in the "name" column, enter the name of the future LLC. There you will immediately see a list of those organizations that already have that name.

Many questions arise with the translation of the name from Russian into English. Therefore, we will focus on the translation and decoding of abbreviations. The abbreviation of JSC names in different countries is different, the legislation is also different, therefore in England - Ltd, America - Inc, Germany - GmbH, France - S.A., Italy - S.p.A., Finland - Oy, etc.

There are many forms of ownership for which it is used in different countries certain abbreviations (abbreviations).

There are many more English company names and their abbreviations, but you can use them very carefully. And it’s better not to use it at all, since the forms of ownership differ significantly in different countries. The abbreviation of the form of ownership makes it possible to distinguish which country it belongs to.

You need to follow the basic rules:

  1. you can not do a direct translation of the abbreviation from Russian into foreign language, they must be transliterated;
  2. when translating into Russian, it is better to leave the abbreviation of the foreign form of ownership in the original language;
  3. as well as doing practical transcription of the names of foreign companies;
  4. in some cases, the names of Russian companies need to be transcribed (practical transcription).

When translating LLC into English, the dictionary gives two options - LLC or Ltd. The tax authorities say that Ltd. For Russia, the more common - Ltd (limited). LLC similar to Limited Liability Company.

Having successfully completed the registration procedure with the Federal Tax Service and received the necessary certificates and licenses from other structures, the business owner will have to spend time establishing business relationships and attracting customers within the country. However, the more successful the start and the smarter the entrepreneur can manage the company, the sooner he will begin to think about entering the international market. This is where the titular question arises: how is the term “LLC” translated into English?

But one answer is not enough. Having coped with the translation, since it is no more difficult than, the entrepreneur will find that the use of foreign abbreviations and terms is far from appropriate in all cases. How to correctly translate into English "limited liability company" and when the translation is inappropriate - see below.

How is LLC translated into English?

In accordance with international legal practice, used in Russian Federation the term "limited liability company" can be translated into English as Limited Liability Company, or LLC. Here Company is "society" and Limited Liability is "limited liability" in the business sense.

Important: the term is most commonly used by North American companies and organizations targeting the relevant market. For a domestic entrepreneur, the abbreviation Ltd. is more familiar, always used with a dot at the end. It is derived from the word Limited and simply means "limited".

You need to understand that the above terms are all acceptable translation options in business communication; no others invented by the entrepreneur on his own or found on the Internet should be used, even if they seem more harmonious or logically justified. Moreover, the abbreviations CJSC or OJSC should not be used - they are intended for joint-stock companies and public joint-stock companies, respectively.
