Put a space after the number sign. Lesson two

In the Russian-language set, a space is required:

  • after, and not before, a comma, period, semicolon, colon, question or exclamation mark (and their combinations), ellipsis at the end of a phrase or sentence, closing brackets and closing quotation marks;
  • before, not after, opening brackets, opening quotation marks, and ellipsis at the beginning of a sentence;
  • both before and after the em dash (in English language, on the contrary, the em dash is not surrounded by spaces).

Never put a space between a bracket or quotation mark and any other punctuation mark other than an em dash.

Non-breaking spaces

Much more interesting is the question of the arrangement of not ordinary, but unbreakable gaps. A non-breaking space should be used to prevent dissonant or difficult-to-read interword hyphens. Namely, it is set:

  • between two initials and between initials and a surname: I. I. Ivanov (hereinafter, non-breakable spaces are represented by the sign);
  • between abbreviated addresses and surname: Mr. Ivanov, as well as after geographical abbreviations such as Moscow or the island of Crimea;
  • between the signs of the number (№) and paragraph (§) and the numbers related to them;
  • inside abbreviations, etc., etc., i.e., and the like (although the English e.g. and i.e. are not separated by spaces);
  • between intratext items, such as a), b) or 1., 2., and the text following them;
  • between numbers and related units: 200 kg; the same applies to indications of dates: 18th century, 1998;
  • before an em dash in the middle of a sentence (thus this punctuation mark is separated by spaces on both sides - unbreakable on the left and regular on the right);
  • between classes of multi-digit numbers, starting with five-digit ones: 32 569, but 4927;
  • before version numbers of software products and parts of their names consisting of numbers or abbreviations: FreeBSD 4.6, Windows 95, MacOS X;
  • after one-letter prepositions and conjunctions, especially at the beginning of a sentence or in a title.

Other languages have their own specific rules. So, in French, colons, semicolons, question and exclamation marks beat off the previous text with unbreakable spaces; herringbone quotation marks are also separated from the enclosed text. In English and German, a non-breaking space can be used along with a regular space at the end of a sentence to visually double the spacing between sentences, although this typographic tradition is now considered obsolete by many.

In Worde, in some visual html editors, a non-breaking space is set as follows: Ctrl + Sift + space.

Transfer rules

  • Transfers that distort the meaning of the word are not allowed.
  • You can not transfer abbreviations that are written in capital letters such as UNR, KPI, MFO.
  • Abbreviations such as etc., etc., cannot be broken by a transfer. and the like.
  • You can not break the transfer of numbers that make up one number. If necessary, you can break the numbers connected by a dash, but the dash remains in the previous line: 1985 -1990, X -XI st.
  • It is undesirable to separate initials from surnames.
  • It is not advisable to separate abbreviated words from given names and surnames: prof. Petrenko, Comrade Ivanov.
  • You cannot separate a digit with a parenthesis or period from the next word.
  • It is not advisable to separate numbers from the following abbreviated words and unit names.
  • Symbols cannot be separated for transfer from the following or previous numbers: 50%, $ 10, No. 25.
  • It is undesirable to have hyphens in more than two adjacent lines.
  • You can't wrap punctuation marks.

Signs and numbers

  • It is impossible for there to be a space between separating characters, except for a dash, and a word.
  • Three dots before a word cannot be separated by a space.
  • A dash between numbers cannot be separated by spaces: 20-30.
  • In direct speech, the dash on the right is separated by a space.
  • The hyphen must not be separated by spaces.
  • Quotation marks are typed in the same font as the text.
  • Signs of degrees, percents, minutes, seconds cannot be separated from the number by a space: 6%. Abbreviations following the degree sign are separated by a space: 20 ° C. Two signs of a number or paragraph are written together: №№, §§.
  • Between the numbers that denote different units - hundreds and thousands, thousands and millions, a space is made: 4 655 210. The fraction designation must be typed without a space: 3.456.
  • Signs + and - do not beat off the number: +10.
  • Fractions are written without a space: 4/7.

QUESTION #2

SPACING RULES WHEN WRITING TEXT IN MICROSOFTWORD

1. Rules for spacing

A space is placed:

    between initials and surname

(T.S. Baidak - Tatyana Stanislavovna Baidak)

    between numbers and units or counter words (20 sq. m; 2012)

    after geographic abbreviations ( Harkov city)

    front ° WITH (25°C)

Attention:°C - in itself a whole sign, a space is NOT put inside it,

    NOT also placed in front of the degree sign ° , minutes’, seconds” (25°, 6’ 10”)

    between number and paragraph signs and numbers ( № 1 ; § 104)

Attention: double signs of a number and a paragraph are written without a space: №№ - numbers, §§ - paragraphs - one word (that is, the spelling fits into our FORMULA)

    front percent sign (received 100% profit)Attention: when " I need 100% guarantees", of course, we don’t put a space - according to the FORMULA, this is one word: one hundred percent

    Single punctuation marks (period, comma, question and exclamation marks, ellipsis, etc.) are NOT preceded by a space. A space is required after a punctuation mark unless it is the end of a paragraph.

    In paired punctuation marks (quotation marks, brackets), a space is placed before the opening character and after the closing character. After the opening and before the closing characters, a space is NOT put.

    before, and after long dash.

VERY IMPORTANT!!!

    It is NOT allowed to have two or more spaces in a row (To fix: press the keyboard shortcut CTRL + F - « find"(2 spaces) - « replace""(1 space) - press « replace all)

Non-breaking space

In connection with the rules that do not allow breaking on different lines, a non-breaking space should be set:

    between surname and initials (N. Gal)

    in abbreviations (etc.)

    between numbers and related words (11 years)

    before the sign of the number (or paragraph) and the number (№ 15)

Use becomes relevant non-breaking space, which will not allow them to "scatter" along different lines. In Word, a non-breaking space is placed using hotkeys: CTRL + SHIFT + SPACE.

Spaces and forward slash (slash)

No space required:

1) when writing abbreviations (km/h, railway)

2) if a slash is used in numbers instead of a dash (2011/2012)

3) if a slash separates single words (income/expenditure; and/or)

Attention: BUT! If a slash is between phrases (or a word and a sl / op), spaces must be put MANDATORY! Otherwise, we read what is written: The child hasmom/coming dad. It turned out nonsense: mom / coming.

RIGHT:The child has a mother / visiting father.

2. Rules for arranging illustrations and tables

in a text document

Illustrations

When designing a page with illustrations, remember:

1. If the text on the page is not divided into columns, do not place small illustrations in the middle of the page - this makes reading very difficult.

2. When placing illustrations, you need to ensure that their right (or left) border coincides with the corresponding text border, and the top and bottom coincide with the corresponding line border.

3. When using multi-column layout, illustrations can be placed between adjacent columns. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure that the text remaining next to the illustration does not turn out to be too narrow.

4. The illustration in the document should be as close as possible to the reference to it.

tables

The heading of each column in the first row of the table should be as short as possible and boldfaced.

All tables (applications in the text), if there are several of them, are numbered with Arabic numerals within the entire text. The inscription "Table ..." is placed above the upper right corner of the table, indicating the serial number of the table (for example, "Table 4"). If there is only one table, then no number is assigned to it and the word "Table" is not written.

Tables are provided with thematic headings, which are located in the middle of the page and are written with capital letter no dot at the end.

When transferring the table to the next page, the headings of the columns of the table should be repeated and the words "Continuation of table 5" should be placed above the table itself. In rare cases, the names of the table columns may not be repeated.

Good evening. I want to clarify: with digital designations in the values \u200b\u200b"from ... to" and "or" is a dash without spaces?

A dash without spaces is placed between the numbers, for example: 10–13, 3–4.

If by "different sources" you meant this:

Some typesetting guides also state that no space should be placed if a dash comes after a period or comma, but with most modern fonts, this advice is rather harmful,

then given source indicates the direct "harmfulness" of the instructions of "some guides."

It should also be remembered that in the language there are no concepts of an em dash or an en dash (this is a matter of text design), just: a dash.

Dear employees of the Diploma, please answer the question I asked today about the supposedly existing sign "en dash without spaces between words." This is not for me, I understand that such a sign does not exist. But you are the only authority I can refer to! However, even if there is an answer from you, some authors declare that the Institute of the Russian Language is not an authority for them ... But still, I still hope for you.

Please formulate somewhere a clear ban on dashes without spaces between words in the Russian text so that you can be referred to! Even 10 years ago, no one would have had the idea to portray anywhere such a miracle as two words connected with a dash without spaces. So there is no prohibition anywhere. But there is a need for it!

The answer of the reference service of the Russian language

The register of codified punctuation marks includes only two types of horizontal dashes: dashes and hyphens. This can be seen by referring to the "Rules of Russian Spelling and Punctuation" of 1956 - a kind of orthographic constitution. Just look at the title. None of the reputable punctuation specialists (A. B. Shapiro, D. E. Rosenthal, N. S. Valgina) added any other punctuation marks to this list.

Dashes must be separated by spaces from preceding and following text. Wed with examples from the 1956 rules and the 2006 academic handbook: physical law Boyle - Mariotte, meeting with the guests of the Olympics - foreigners.

The only case when the dash is not beaten off spaces, - position between numbers.

(I highlighted in the last line a dash of Gramoty.ru, broken off by a comma.)

The dash is separated by spaces according to the following rules:

    after a dash at the beginning of a paragraph (in direct speech or in lists), a non-breaking space of the usual size is placed;

    a dash denoting a range of values, the boundaries of which are given by numbers (1941-1945, XVI-XVII), do not beat off with spaces;

  • around all other dashes, it is prescribed to put narrow (2 points) spaces, and the space before the dash must be inseparable. However, due to the technical limitations of computer typing, it is not uncommon for shortened spaces to be replaced with regular ones; this practice is also allowed officially “in operational printing publications”;

    • a dash following a comma or period is typed without a space according to academic rules, however, in modern fonts, such a set looks ugly and this requirement has been practically abandoned.

Hello. Develop my doubts, please... When asked if a space is needed before the designation of percentages (for example, 100%), the answer was that the sign of percent is beaten off by a space from the number. Therefore, I would like to know with absolute certainty whether the gap between the number and the % sign is fundamental. It is important. Thank you

The answer of the reference service of the Russian language

The % sign is recommended to beat off from the number. We ourselves follow this rule, but perhaps in some answers we made technical negligence. We will be grateful if you tell us the numbers of these answers, we will correct it.
