It is interesting to imagine what would have happened if the dinosaurs had not died out, but still lived in some part of the Earth. Surely, this would arouse the interest of all scientists. The reader has a good opportunity to make a trip to such a place with the help of Arthur Conan Doyle's book The Lost World. The novel was released about a century ago, but remains a popular adventure work and has been filmed more than once. Events quickly replace one another, the writer does not stop to reason, the characters get into dangerous situations, you worry about them and do not notice how you turn page after page. This book was the first in a series about the adventures of the Challenger.

The novel tells about a unique British expedition to the uncharted lands of America. Professor Challenger found the notes of a deceased scientist, which told about the lost world. Civilization did not reach there, and therefore dinosaurs, apes and primitive people still live there. Using the found diary, the professor went to that place, but as proof he could only get a lizard wing and take a few photographs. This was too little to prove the existence of the lost world in the scientific community.

Aspiring journalist Eduard Melone wants to win the heart of his beloved, and therefore asks the publisher for a more difficult task in order to impress the girl. Then he is sent to interview the taciturn and strange Professor Challenger. The journalist manages to find a common language with the professor, and later he goes with him on a scientific expedition in search of the lost world. Also with them goes the skeptical scientist Summerlee and the traveler Roxton. What awaits them in uncharted lands? What dangers do they pose?

About The Lost World by Arthur Doyle

There are a lot of mysterious places on our planet where a person simply cannot reach. In South America, there are tribes that still live according to primitive rules and do not even suspect what is happening in the world. So why should we rule out the possibility that somewhere there is a world where dinosaurs and prehistoric flora and fauna survived?

Arthur Conan Doyle's book "The Lost World" tells about a difficult journey in South America, where the world is located with dinosaurs and its inhabitants - ape people.
The story tells about a little mad scientist George Challenger. One day, he finds a traveler's diary, which shows the route to a mysterious place, as well as images of dinosaurs and other animals that should have become extinct many years ago.

Edward Melone, trying to prove to his beloved that he is worth something and can perform real feats, goes to his superiors for any difficult task. He is a journalist by profession and is sent to interview Gellenger, who, by the way, hates journalists. Thus begins the acquaintance of Melone, which develops into a joint journey through the Amazon to a new world.

Along the way, the entire expedition faces all sorts of difficulties. This is an Indian tribe, and difficult to pass places of that area. As a result, they come to a plateau, where they discover dinosaurs. They have to fight pterodactyls and allosaurs, and then apemen.

Challenger's version that dinosaurs could exist somewhere else was confirmed. However, as usually happens, there were many more skeptics than those who supported the professor. That is why Challenger became so embittered, but at the same time he never doubted himself and his quest.

Melone, on his return, was in for a very cruel disappointment. His girlfriend, for whom, in fact, he went on an expedition to prove to her his respect and affection, managed to marry another. At the same time, she reproached him for leaving her, which means that his feelings were insincere.

The book "The Lost World" by Arthur Conan Doyle captures literally from the first pages and you can't put it down until you find out how the journey to the dangerous prehistoric world will end. The main characters are waiting for a huge amount of danger and adventure, and on their way they constantly meet different reptiles who are not averse to feasting on unprecedented creatures from the surface of the Earth.

Quotes from The Lost World by Arthur Doyle

You never know there are people who never talk about their adventures for fear that they will not be believed! Who will judge them for this! A month or two will pass, and everything will seem like a dream to us.

Vestiga nulla retrorsum! (Not a step back! (lat.)) Make it a rule to never look back, always look only ahead, where a great feat awaits you.

If you want to write a good essay, you have to visit the scene yourself.

You can be a hero anywhere.

Everything new, unknown, is drawn to me in advance much more terrible than it turns out to be in reality.

There are times when each of us is obliged to stand up for human rights and justice, so as not to lose respect for ourselves.

But nature, operating with enormous forces for many centuries, is itself the greatest chemist, and she can succeed in what is beyond our strength.

If a young gentleman in a red tie, who shouted "Well, let's put it!" and, apparently having reason to think that he has hatched from an egg, deigns to linger after the meeting, the lecturer will be very glad to familiarize himself with such a landmark.

And the risk, dear young man, gives our existence a special poignancy. Only then is life worth living. We have become too pampered, dimmed, accustomed to livability.

We know the famous British writer Arthur Conan Doyle as the author of fascinating detective stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes. However, not everyone is aware that this writer was also a notable science fiction writer who created a work that can be put on a par with the best masters of the adventure genre: Jules Verne, Louis Boussinard, and many others.

The novel "The Lost World" tells us about the unique adventures of the British expedition led by Professor Challenger in the amazing "Lost World". This is a place in South America where civilization has not been able to reach. No events of the outside world affected this corner of ancient nature: dinosaurs, mammoths, saber-toothed tigers still live there, and the people inhabiting the lost world remained at the level of the Stone Age.

The professor, who learned from the records of a deceased colleague about the existence of a lost world, wants to equip a full-fledged expedition there in order to prove to the modern scientific community the reality of the existence of this unique place. After all, when he undertook this venture alone, without companions and witnesses, they did not even believe his direct evidence - the wing of an ancient lizard and several photographs.

This time, the professor will be accompanied on his journey by a young journalist who dreams of accomplishing some feat in the name of his beloved, the Irishman Malone, and Lord John Roxton, the famous traveler and hunter. In addition, they will also be accompanied by a very skeptical and distrustful Professor Summerlee: he wants to prove the failure of the Challenger hypothesis.

Filled with amazing adventures, betrayals and exploits, scientific terms and much more that so attracts all readers - the story of The Lost World is only the first book in a series about the adventures of Professor Challenger. The heroes of Arthur Conan Doyle, as always, are written out with the greatest psychological accuracy, have self-sufficiency and memorable characters, and evoke the most violent feelings.

Somewhat barbaric from a modern point of view, but fascinating expedition unfolds quickly, without dramatic pauses and unnecessary psychologism: the novel "The Lost World" from the first to the last page remains an adventure, and does not let go of the reader's attention for a minute. This is also facilitated by Arthur Conan Doyle's excellent knowledge of biology and history: he talks in detail about ancient monsters and the habits of ape-men, saber-toothed tigers and other fossils, which turned out to be quite alive and real.

Book Description

Why do dinosaurs arouse such keen interest in modern man? Probably because it is very difficult to imagine these animals, their size, bloodthirstiness, a great variety of species, despite all kinds of films and reconstructions. For the same reason, the story "The Lost World" by Arthur Conan Doyle, written at the end of the 19th century, is still read in one breath. Together with the heroes of this book, we are very close to the ancient, full of zagotovki world, to survive in which a person is already tantamount to a feat.

For middle school age.
